Santiago de Compostela is based on five pillars: politics/administration, as the seat of the Galician Government’s institutions; education, by virtue of the University of Santiago de Compostela’s weight; healthcare, due to the importance of the extensive health complex linked to the Medicine Faculty; tourism/culture, which is the driving force behind the hotel and catering sectors; and commerce, as the shopping centre of an extensive region.

From this solid starting point, Compostela is looking to the future to make the most of the new opportunities provided by the new structure based on the General Plan of Urban Regulation, the modernisation of the local administration and the stimulus of integrated policies. These will provide advanced infrastructures and facilities and will help to diversify the economy, paying special attention to innovative private enterprise.
